Taoiseach Says Stricter Covid 19 Measures May Extend Beyond May

The Taoiseach has warned only a vaccine or anti-viral will allow life in Ireland to return to normal after the Coronavirus crisis.

People can only leave their homes for essential work which cannot be done from home.

You are allowed leave to buy food or household goods, to go to medical appointments and vital family reasons.

People can also leave for brief physical exercise, but only within 2km of their home and must observe physical distancing.

Gardai will be out patrolling and can fine people.

All gatherings are banned, and visits to hospitals and prisons will end.

People over the age of 70 and those who are vulnerable must 'cocoon' in their homes and have food and medical supplies arranged.

The government response has been based on the medical advice depending on what stage the spread of the virus has been at, where it is on the curve that medics have been talking about.

Leo Varadkar has told the Dáil the restrictions will be unwound over months and not necessarily on May 5th.
